verb: the phenomenon of reducing carbon dioxide emissions in one area of an individual's lifestyle that results in an increase of emissions in another area.

As an example, carbon shifting may occur when cost-savings are achieved through purchase and installation of carbon-mitigating, energy-efficient household appliances, and the money saved is spent on other purchases or activities that are not carbon-zero.
